HU to Celebrate National TRIO Day
Hampton, VA - A Hampton University Upward Bound alumnus will be the featured speaker at the HU TRIO day event Feb. 16 in the Hampton University Student Center Ballroom. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the official program begins at 10 a.m.
The featured speaker, C. Vernon Spratley Middle School Principal Rashard J. Wright, 29, is the youngest principal ever hired in the city of Hampton. As a high school student, Wright was part of the Upward Bound program at HU, an education and training program under the umbrella of the TRIO program.
The Educational Talent Search (ETS) program that helps students prepare for post secondary education or training, and Student Support Services (SSS) that provides services to increase retention and graduate rates at HU, are part of TRIO as well. National TRIO day recognizes federally funded programs that provide services to low-income, first generation and/or disabled students.
In addition to Wright, Virginia Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA-3), will speak briefly at the event. Also, two sessions by a father and son team, Charles Corey III and Charles Corey Jr., entitled "Millionaire Mindset" and "Credit is Cool" will be conducted. Informational tables with voter registration, black history, and TRIO information will be available.
Canned foods for the Peninsula Food Bank will be accepted at the event, which is scheduled to end at noon. For more information contact The Educational Talent Search office at 757.727.5607.
