HU Presents Black Heritage Extravaganza
Hampton, VA -On Feb. 22, 2007, the Hampton University Student Leaders in conjunction with the NAACP will host the 8th Annual Black Heritage Extravaganza in celebration of Black History Month. This event is free and open to the public. It will include a re-creation of an actual African marketplace in the University’s museum, as well as an educational and entertaining performance entitled “Access Denied.”
From 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Hampton University Museum Biggers’ Circle members will have a student guided tour of the Africobra, Pamunkey, and Jamestown 2007 exhibits in the HU museum. Student organizations will also be presenting a still museum in which students will re-enact different moments in black history. The museum will also have community and student vendors who will be selling items that honor the heritage and creativity of African and African-American people.
The second half of the Black Heritage Extravaganza will feature an entertaining performance titled “Access Denied” at 7:30 p.m. in the Hampton University Ogden Hall Auditorium. The performance will commemorate black achievement and success throughout history and contains numerous skits based on the premise: “What would the world be like without black people?” The performance will present many aspects of black culture, such as; tap dance, African dance, jazz music, classical music and hip-hop.
