PRESIDENT TO BE AWARDED FOR LEADERSHIP
Hampton, VA - Hampton University President William R.
Harvey to receive the Chief Executive Leadership Award on Monday,
February 23, 2004, at the Council for the Advancement and Support
of Education (CASE), District III conference at the Hyatt Regency
in Atlanta, Ga.
“Academically and financially, Hampton University is a model of strength,
service, and excellence because of Dr. Harvey's creativity, capable leadership,
and perhaps most importantly, ability to inspire others to believe in his vision
and work with him to achieve great things,” said John Lippincott, interim
president of CASE.
“Since leadership is essential to the success of any entity it is an honor
to be recognized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education,” said
Harvey. “It is a joy for me to serve others and when your efforts are highlighted
by one of the elite advancement organizations in the country, I am pleased.”
“During President Harvey's tenure, Hampton has experienced significant
academic and fund-raising success and has also been a major force for economic
development in its community,” Lippincott said.
“And while President Harvey has devoted much of his energy to his own institution,
he has had an impact well beyond Hampton by serving on several national education
boards and advisory panels, and mentoring the next generation of college presidents.
He is precisely the kind of leader that the CASE Chief Executive Leadership Award
was created to honor.”
The CEO Awards were created in 1999 to recognize
leaders of CASE-member institutions for taking exceptional initiative
to promote and support
education. Nominees
must show excellent skills in articulating their vision and leading
others to achieve it, in establishing positive images for their institutions’ stature
within the community, and in encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship
among employees. Nominees must actively participate in key advancement
efforts.
Harvey’s leadership is reflected in the
growth and quality of the University’s
student population, academic programs, physical facilities, and financial
base. During his tenure, the student population was increased by
45% and the average
SAT score was increased by over 300 points. His commitment to expansion
and innovation in academics has resulted in 64 new academic programs
at the University. “It has been said that people perish without a vision, therefore I am indebted
to those who have taken ownership in my vision of building Hampton University
into one of the premier modest-sized universities in the country,” said
Harvey.
Harvey has served on the President’s National
Advisory Council on Elementary and Secondary Education, the Defense
Advisory Committee on Women in the Service,
the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, the Commission
of Presidential Scholars, the President’s Advisory Board
on Historically Black Colleges and the U.S. Department of Commerce
Minority Development Advisory
Board.
Currently, Harvey serves as a board member of
Fannie Mae, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, and Wachovia Bank
Mid Atlantic Region. |
