MEDIA SYMPOSIUM TO FOCUS ON THE EFFECT OF JOURNALISM ON WORLD
EVENTS
Hampton, VA - Hampton
University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications
will host the 31st Annual Media
Symposium on March 3 and the Career Forum on March 4. Both events
are free and open to the public.
This year’s theme "Communications:
Making a global connection," examines
how journalism and communications professionals have significant roles in covering,
influencing and affecting international relationships, perspectives and perceptions.
At the symposium on March 3, various panelists
will discuss topics such as media entrepreneurship, entertainment
media, sports media,
black media ventures
and photojournalism. On March 4, advertising, public relations, print journalism,
broadcast journalism, media management and alternative careers will be represented
at the career forum. During the career forum there will be speakers for each
media career including a session entitled "Journalists to Authors" featuring
Douglas Smith and Jill Nelson.
There will be representatives from national organizations
including Deborah Barrington from USA Today; keynote luncheon speaker
John
Yearwood, world editor
at The Miami Herald and Col. Rodney Davis of the Joint Forces Staff College
to discuss global dialogue in light of the theme, "Communications: Making
a global connection."
A variety of local professionals who will be panelists
include Barbara Ciara, broadcast journalist from NewsChannel 3;
Angela
Forest, education reporter
at the Daily Press; Chris Tyree, staff photographer for the Virginian-Pilot;
Charles E. "Chuck" Penn, manager of media and community relations
for Dominion Virginia Power, eastern region; Marvin Lake, public editor at
the Virginian-Pilot; Dawn Hope, public communications coordinator for the City
of Chesapeake.
This year’s symposium will allow attendees
to get a better grasp of the media profession and network with
