HU Child Dev. Center Celebrates Read Across America
Hampton, VA - Teachers and students at
Hampton University’s Child Development Center will join millions of
their peers across the nation to celebrate the National Education Association’s
(NEA) Read Across America program with Celebrity Readers Day. The
event welcomes three area celebrities on March 2 at 11 a.m. to the Center,
located in Eva C. Mitchell Hall, 50 E. Tyler Street, Hampton, Va.
The HU Child Development Center welcomes Fort Monroe Garrison
Commander Col. Anthony D. Reyes, HU Class of 1984, city of Hampton Police
Chief Charles Jordan, Jr., and Mrs. Doretha Spells, HU vice president of
business affairs and treasurer, as celebrity guest readers. The three
will read books to the children and sign autographs. Following the
readings, each classroom will participate in age-appropriate activities
related to the theme of the stories.
“It is with a great deal of excitement that we are able to have community
support showing the children that education can lead to exciting and rewarding
careers,” said Constance Goode, director of the HU Child Development
Center.
Launched in 1998, Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration
of reading. NEA’s Read Across America, which falls on beloved
children’s author Dr. Seuss’s birthday, expects more than 45
million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read. With
research showing that children who are motivated to read perform better
in school, this annual reading motivation and awareness program aims to
bring reading excitement to children of all ages. |
