Hampton, VA -Hampton
University will host the 2nd Annual Information
Assurance Symposium April 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the HU
Student Center.
The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum that
will serve the building of Information Assurance capacity and improve infrastructure
at Minority Serving Institutions. It also aims to develop relationships with
Commonwealth and federal agencies and Commonwealth research institutions.
It
will feature speakers from the Department of
Homeland Security, National Institutes of Standards and Technology,
and Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute.
“The main focus is to provide faculty and information
technology professionals at minority institutions with the information they
need to build critical Information Assurance infrastructure,” said
Robert Willis, chair of the department of computer science. Faculty from
other universities and interested IT professionals are also welcome pending
seating availability.
The event will continue on last year's theme of “Building
Information Assurance Capacity and Improving Infrastructure at Minority
Serving Institutions.”
Scheduled speakers from Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering
Institute at this year's symposium include Scott A. Hissam, who will speak
on “Prediction
Enabled Component Technology;” luncheon keynote speaker Linda Northrop,
who will discuss “Putting the 'Plug' into 'Plug and Play;'” and
principal keynote speaker Richard D. Pethia, director of the Networked
Systems Survivability Program.
The event exceeded expectations in its first year, when
representatives from all of Virginia's HBCUs, as well as HBCUs in Maryland,
North Carolina and Georgia, attended.
