HU Hosts American Cancer Society AfroFlow Concert Tour
Hampton, VA - Hampton University will host the American Cancer Society South Atlantic division AfroFlow concert tour on Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in Ogden Hall. The concert will feature spoken-word artist, MIKE-E and the HotSauce band. MIKE-E has appeared on "Def Poetry Jam" presented by Russell Simmons on HBO. The event is free and open to the public.
The concert tour will focus on minimizing the use and effects of tobacco among black college students.
"Students need to be aware of what they do," said Dr. Marilyn Wells, chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER).
MIKE-E visited the Hampton University campus in summer 2006 and amazed HPER summer camp participants with his talent and energy.
During the HU tour, MIKE-E will also visit classes in various departments to discuss tobacco use.
"Tobacco use is not just a health issue, but an economic, sociological, and mathematic issue among other subjects," said Wells.
The HU AfroFlow tour is supported by a $10,000 grant received in April 2006 by the HPER department from the American Cancer Society. Other grant funds have been used to provide scholarship assistance for two HPER project assistants, to form a new HU Colleges Against Cancer chapter, Relay For Life, and various other efforts to help fight tobacco use and cancer.
"We encourage people to speak up about cancer and survivorship," said Wells.
