HU Players and Company Presents "Grease: A Musical"

Jonathan Lee and Alesia Lucas star as Sandy and Danny in "Grease."

Hampton, VA -The 1950s are back with high-energy rock n' roll as Hampton University's Department of Fine and Performing Arts and the HU Players and Company proudly present "Grease: A Musical" at HU's Little Theatre in Armstrong Hall. The musical will run March 22-24 at 8 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on March 25 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens, children and students and admission for HU students is free.

Known as one of the most popular musicals of all time, "Grease" is a high-spirited look at a nostalgic time when the mythical teenagers of Rydell High discover love and life. Join Danny, Sandy, the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies as they sing some of the most popular and infectious songs of all time!

“Grease” premiered in 1971 at Chicago’s Kingston Mines Theater and later became a Broadway hit.  In 1978, actors John Travolta and Olivia Newton John made the film version of “Grease” an American standard.  Today “Grease” is back in demand as NBC currently airs “Grease: You’re the One That I Want,” a national search for the two leads for a new Broadway production opening in June.  As the NBC series concludes, catch the “Grease” spirit at Hampton University and remember, “Grease is the word.”

Dr. Karen Turner Ward, chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, will serve as director for “Grease.”  For 22 years she has served as a producer/director of the HU Players and Company for such productions as “The Wiz,” “Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery,” “Equus,” and “The Little Shop of Horrors.”

Jerry Bracey, assistant professor of music and director of the HU Orchestra, will serve as musical director and Deborah Walker will act as costume designer.  Faye Walker returns as choreographer for “Grease.”  She has choreographed numerous HU Players’ productions including “Once on this Island,” “Dreamgirls,” and “What Use Are Flowers?”  And in his 19th season with the HU Players, assistant professor of speech and theater C. Perry Otto will head scenic and light design for the musical.

“Grease” stars Alesia Lucas as Sandy and Jonathan Lee as Danny.
