HU Hosts Relay For Life
Hampton, VA - Hampton University’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation department will host a Relay For Life event March 27-28. The event, in its third year at HU, is to raise money to assist local cancer patients and their families.
HU’s event goes from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. and begins at Holland Hall. A survivors’ reception is at 6 pm in the HU Student Center Ballroom to honor survivors and one of their caregivers.
Nationally, the overnight event is designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs for the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps around a track. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
Last year HU’s relay raised $14,361. This year’s goal is $16, 500. According to the relayforlife.org website, the funds raised save lives by funding cutting-edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services. One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, the site said.
Cancer survivors and people who want to join the fight against cancer and start a team are asked to visit http://www.relayforlife.org/hamptonuniversity or contact Valerie Burge-Hall at Valerie.burge-hall@hamptonu.edu or 757.728.6994.
