HU Hosts Adventures in Engineering for School Children
Hampton, VA -Hampton University will host this year’s “Adventures in Engineering” conference on Saturday, April 14 from 9 - 3 p.m. in the McGrew Towers Conference Center. This is the fifth year for the event and it is free and open to students in grades 5-8 and their families.
The purpose of the conference is for school aged children to get exposed to and interested in the field of engineering. It will also help them learn how to prepare academically for an education in the field.
“We are very excited about showing the children what engineers do and how they create value and solve problems,” said Jale Akyurtlu, professor of chemical engineering.
Students participating will get hands-on interaction with projects like building architecture using toothpicks and candy and creating different types of ‘ooze’. There will also be demonstrations on water purification.
A panel of professional engineers and faculty will answer questions from students and parents, discussing the field of engineering, offering tips for education, and highlighting learning opportunities in the field.
The Society of Women Engineers’ HU student chapter and Hampton Roads SWE professional section are joint sponsors. Akyurtlu helped create the HU chapter.
The registration deadline is March 28. For more information, contact Jale Akyurtlu at 757-727-5589 or jale.akyurtlu@hamptonu.edu.
