Computer Security Symposium to Feature State Technology Sec.
Hampton, VA - Computer
security issues being raised daily and community worries with Internet
security will be discussed at Hampton University's Department of Computer
Science 3rd annual Information Assurance Symposium on Monday, April 9
from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
The theme
of the symposium is "Building Information Assurance
Capacity and Improving Infrastructure at Minority Serving
Institutions."
Aneesh Chopra, secretary of technology for
the Commonwealth of Virginia, will be the morning's guest
speaker. He will discuss computer security and other technology
issues in Virginia. Chopra is currently Virginia's fourth secretary of
technology. He leads the Commonwealth's strategy to effectively leverage
technology in government reform, promotes Virginia's innovation agenda,
and fosters technology-related economic development with a special emphasis
on entrepreneurship.
"Information assurance is a topic that
transcends computer science and impacts everyone in a
technological society," said
Robert Willis, computer science professor and symposium
planner.
The morning session will open with a greeting
by Dr. Jean Muhammad, chair of the computer science department,
followed by an introduction of the day's presenters
before Chopra's message.
Some of the afternoon presenters
and their respective topics include: Daniel J. Ryan, professor
of systems management at the National Defense University,
will address public policy and law in cyberspace; Hampton's
own Dr. Yen-Hung Hu, assistant computer science professor, will engage
the audience on possible ways to detect and prevent
attacks before they reach the victims; and Timothy Summers
of the National Security Agency will introduce information
security and discuss ways better educate students on
a variety of computer science areas.
The luncheon speaker
is Dr. Corey Schou, director of both the National Information
Assurance Training and Education Center and the Simplot
Decision Support Center and a member of the Idaho State
University Faculty.
