HU Pre-Med Students Host Health Conference
Hampton, VA - The Hampton University Chapter of the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students will host their first pre-health conference Sat., April 21 from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. in the Student Center theatre and ballroom.
The theme of the conference is "Changing Reality: A Challenge to the Future Health Professional."
“The conference will highlight the current realities of the healthcare profession while encouraging pre-health students to make changes for the better,” said Frui Awasum, HU pre-med student and president of HU’s chapter. The organization's advisor is Dr. Alfred McQueen, associate professor of biology.
The keynote speaker will be HU alumnae Dr. Sandra Gadson ’71, nephrologist and 2006 President of the National Medical Association. Carlos Smith ’03, a 2007 DDS candidate and president of the Student National Dental Association, and Rory Goodwin, MD/Ph. D. candidate and president-elect of the Student National Medical Association, will also speak at the conference.
The conference will feature interactive workshops, panel sessions by current medical and dental students, practicing physicians and dentists, and admissions officers from medical schools. Representatives from the following schools are scheduled to be in attendance: Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Howard University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Medical College of Virginia, University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
