MIKE-E and AfroFlow Tour stop at HU
Hampton, VA - Recording Artist MIKE-E will perform 9 p.m. April 11 at Hampton University's Armstrong Stadium as part of this year's 2008 AfroFlow Tour. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
The site is also the venue for HU's Relay For Life fundraiser from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. that day. The tour is a major component of the American Cancer Society's (ACS) initiative to engage young African-Americans in addressing cancer rates in their communities. The ACS is sponsoring the concert.
Along with MIKE-E, noted for his motivational lyric content and repeat appearances on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, the HU show includes vocalist Kenny Watson, DJ Invisible and African percussionist Sowande' Keita with a live band. This is MIKE-E's third year performing at HU since the school became a recipient of an ACS, South Atlantic Division, Historically Black College and University Model Campus Demonstration Grant that required establishment of a Colleges Against Cancer and Relay For Life on campus.
The local event is part of a larger tour of HBCU's throughout the Southeastern United States. Other scheduled stops on the 2008 tour include Bowie State University, University of Maryland and Albany State University.
The AfroFlow tour is student and family friendly, and maintains high respect for women. The term AfroFlow means flowing from Africa. Chrysler, Pelle Pelle, Java Hope Coffee and Ethiopian Airlines also support the tour.
