HU Welcomes SACS Reaffirmation Committee to Campus

Hampton, VA - Hampton University will host a nine-member visiting team on April 14 -16 for one of the final stages of the process leading to reaffirmation of accreditation. The peer-review committee represents the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the regional accrediting body for 11 Southeastern states.

Hampton Institute (now University) was initially accredited in 1932. Accreditation was last reaffirmed in 1998. Each member institution is reviewed every ten years.

Reaffirmation of accreditation under the new SACS guidelines requires the institution to submit two documents to the Commission: the Compliance Certification and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The Compliance Certification is the document completed by the institution to confirm its compliance with each of the core requirements and comprehensive standards.

The QEP describes a carefully designed and focused plan of action to address an issue or topic directly related to improving student learning. The primary goal of Hampton University's QEP, "From These Roots... A Foundation for Life: Mathematics and Financial Literacy," is to improve student learning outcomes in mathematics. Through implementation of the QEP, students will learn to apply essential mathematical competencies and financial concepts to real-world problems.

Both documents have been submitted and the peer-review team will examine data and conduct a wide variety of interviews with Hampton University administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

"We look forward to a successful reaffirmation visit," said Dr. Pollie Murphy, assistant provost for academic affairs and accreditation liaison.
