HU Students Compete in Prudential Financial' 2008 Business Case Competition

Hampton, VA - Winners of the Prudential Financial 2008 Business Case Competition, which is held in collaboration with the Hampton University School of Business, were chosen April 11 at Prudential Financial headquarters in Newark, N.J. The winning team entitled, SKLW Associates, included Hampton University students Shayna Thompson, Kimberly A. Pace, Leon Chisolm and Whitney Barno. Undergraduate and graduate teams participated in this year's competition by recommending strategies on which generational group offers Prudential Retirement the best opportunity for growth as a target market. Each student of the winning team received a $5,250 cash award.

HU School of Business professors collaborate with executives from Prudential to develop the case study. Six teams had three weeks to prepare and present their recommendations, based on a predefined set of criteria, to a panel of Prudential executives who traveled to the university to meet with competitors. Finalists were invited to Prudential's headquarters for a full day of events, including the presentation of their strategies to a panel of senior executives.

"The business case competition is a win-win for both Hampton and Prudential," said Dr. Sid Credle, dean of the HU School of Business. "Our students get the opportunity to discuss business strategy with one of the nation's most recognized financial services companies, while Prudential gets the benefit of fresh and creative recommendations from students who, in many cases, very closely mirror the markets it wishes to serve." Prudential Financial, Inc., is a financial services leader that offers a variety of products and services, including life insurance, annuities, retirement-related services, mutual funds, investment management, and real estate services.

"We're excited about our ongoing relationship with Hampton University, which we believe helps prepare promising students for a successful career in financial services," said Mark Grier, Vice Chairman, Prudential Financial, Inc. "The competition offers us the opportunity to meet and engage tomorrow's future business leaders through a discussion on the very real challenges facing our company, as we seek to put millions of American workers on the path to a secure retirement."
