DMV SEATBELT SAFETY DAY HU, HAMPTON CITY POLICE AND
HAMPTON DMV TO HOST SAFE DRIVING EVENT
Hampton, VA -
The Hampton University Office of Governmental Relations, in conjunction with Hampton City Police, Hampton Department of Motor Vehicles,
and Hampton University Police Department will be hosting "DMV Seatbelt Safety Day" on Friday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hampton
University's Student Center Atrium. This event is free and open to the public.
This event will feature several booths and presentations discussing safe driving practices, benefits of using
safety belts, and drunk driving. The Hampton University Student Leaders will perform skits emphasizing the negative effects of drinking and driving.
The Hampton City Police Department will be handing out pamphlets about drunk driving and information about its "Click It or Ticket" campaign. "Click It or Ticket"
is a high visibility enforcement program used in 18 other states and Washington, D.C., that is designed to raise safety belt usage and save people from death and
serious injury on the streets and highways.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2004 16,694 people in the U.S. died in alcohol-related motor vehicle
crashes, representing 39 percent of all traffic-related fatalities. The implementation of the program was motivated by recent incidents concerning drunk driving,
lack of seatbelt usage, and reckless driving. The event hopes to reach all audiences, especially college students.
