Shola Lynch to Visit HU J-School
Hampton, VA - Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications will welcome director and producer Shola Lynch to discuss her film “Chisholm ’72: Unbought and Unbossed” on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. Lynch’s visit is a part of the School’s Caldwell Café series and will be held at the Scripps Howard Auditorium.
Lynch’s career began in New York City, where she began acting on Sesame Street at the age of two. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Texas and a master’s degree from the University of California, Riverside.
Throughout her professional career, Lynch has worked with Ken Burns and Florentine Films on the Peabody Award-winning film about American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the ten point JAZZ series. She has also worked on the Emmy award-winning HBO Sports documentary “Do You Believe in Miracles? The Story of the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team.” Currently, Lynch is developing a documentary on political activist and professor Angela Davis.
During the Café, Lynch will discuss and show excerpts of her 2006 Peabody award-winning documentary “Chisholm ’72: Unbought and Unbossed.” The documentary highlights the 1972 presidential campaign trial of democratic candidate, Shirley Chisholm who was the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress and to run for President. Food and drink will be offered following the Café.
Scripps Howard’s writer-in-residence Earl Caldwell, a nationally renowned journalist, created Caldwell Cafe. It was designed for students as well as the public to be exposed to media and journalism professionals in a relaxed environment.
