HU Concert to Benefit New Cafeteria

Hampton, VA - The National Hampton Alumni Association (NHAA), Inc. is hosting a New Cafeteria Window Benefit Concert on May 7 at 7 p.m. in Ogden Hall. Tickets are $22, and are available at the Hampton University Convocation Center box office and Ticketmaster.

Proceeds from the concert, which features several HU alumni, will go toward construction costs for the planned $25 million Student Dining Facility and Activity Hall. The target date for the new facility is fall 2009, however construction won’t begin until Hamptonians and friends match the challenge grant of $5 million. The concert’s goal is to raise $25,000 for the new cafeteria, said Joan Wickham, ’78, who is one of the performers.

“The concept is that Hampton University is rich in music,” Wickham said. “In the 1800s the Hampton Institute choirs sang up money to help build Virginia Cleveland Hall and other buildings. All of us are alums from the music department. This is our way to give back to the university.”

The concert features the following HU alumni: University Choirs Director Royzell Dillard ’83, Roland Carter ’64, Omar Dickenson ’97 and Wickham. Also, the Crusaders Male Chorus of Hampton, Va., founded by Charles Flax in 1939, will also perform.
