HU Alumni Donate $1.4 Million to the University
Hampton, VA -
The National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. recently announced that Hampton University alumni gave the University a combined gift of $1.4 million so far this fiscal year. Checks were presented to the University during the Annual Alumni Reunion Banquet on May 13.
"Your generous gifts are a testament to your commitment to Hampton University," HU President William R. Harvey told the alumni. "Many generations of Hamptonians will benefit from your benevolent spirit."
Many HU alumni are compelled to give to the University so others may have the opportunities they were afforded. Hampton, Va. resident Gloria F. Pressley, a member of the HU class of 1956, donated $125,400 in honor of her 50th class reunion.
"The cost for education is spiraling and so is the need for education," said Pressley, a retired teacher. "I have been encouraged by others and I want to encourage others. I am endeared by Hampton University."
The initial annuity from Pressley's gift will pay for her granddaughter to attend Hampton University. The residuals from the gift will be used to create scholarships for students in the School of Business and the Department of Education.
Also residents of Hampton, Va., Jap and Sadie Curry of the Class of 1941 and 1943 respectively donated $115,000 in the form of a charitable remainder trust.
Alumni and friends of Hampton University earmark their gifts for many different University funds including scholarships and building funds. To make a donation to Hampton University call the Office of Campaign at 757-727-5764.
