TO HOST HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM INSTITUTE
Hampton, VA - The
Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton
University will host a High School Journalism Institute for high
school students on June 20-26.
It is the goal of the Scripps Howard School of
Journalism and Communications to significantly increase the number
of people of color in America’s newsrooms.
To meet this goal the Scripps Howard School recognizes that it is important to
inspire and support our nation’s high school students who are interested
in journalism.
Through a week-long program, 18 high school students
will be provided with the basic skills they need to become professional
newspaper and broadcast journalists. They will have the opportunity
to learn print and broadcast journalism from HU faculty, local
professionals and HU student journalists. They will produce a newspaper,
Web site, radio news and a television segment.
The institute is funded by a grant from the Scripps
Howard Foundation. The institute is open to high school students
currently in grades 10 or 11. Students of racially and ethnically
diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. No prior
media experience is required.
The selected students will have their tuition
waived and all supplies, housing, meals and field trips will
be free. They only need transportation to and from Hampton University
and spending money.
