Hampton, VA - The Hampton University William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library will host the “Barack Obama in Children’s Literature” exhibit kickoff on Thursday, May 6 at 11 a.m. in the Library’s Peabody Room. The exhibit will be open to the public through June 30. In honor of President Obama’s pending visit at the University’s 140th Commencement Ceremony, the Library will celebrate with a reading of “I am Barack Obama” by Charisse Carney-Nunes to children from the HU Child Development Center.
The reading will serve to launch a new exhibit of children’s books centered on Barack Obama housed in the HU Harvey Library Peabody Collection Room. The collection of nearly 40 books features comic books, illustrated books, and books written by and for children in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade.
“We are extremely excited because this reading will kick off the entire exhibit of children’s books centered on President Barack Obama as the university simultaneously prepares for President Obama’s visit,” said Alfred Willis, assistant director for collection development at the Harvey Library.
The exhibit of children’s books is part of a larger collection of nearly 1,400 items on the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election housed at Harvey Library.
“I am Barack Obama” allows children to see themselves through the inspirational story of President Barack Obama growing up as an ordinary child asking, “Who will change the world?” The book highlights for children their personal power to change the world.
