HU TO HOST SECOND HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM INSTITUTE THIS SUMMER
Second institute added to accommodate demand

Hampton, VA - The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University will offer a one-week civic journalism institute July 19 - July 23. Rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who live in the Hampton, Va., area are eligible to apply for the civic journalism institute.

More than 75 high school students from around the country applied for the 18 spots in the Schools June High School Journalism institute. Due to the overwhelming response to the June program, the Scripps Howard School of Journalism has secured funding from the Scripps Howard Foundation and Uth Act to offer a second institute in July.

Uth Act selected the Scripps Howard High School Civic Journalism Institute as one of the four projects it funded this summer. Uth ACT provides the opportunity for youth-led social action in Hampton through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Uth Act’s lead partner, Alternatives, Inc., is a national leader in youth development with a focus on engaging a broad diversity of young people from all aspects of the community. This civic journalism institute will allow students in the area to produce media products to educate and engage high school students on social issues.

The participants will learn how to use mass media and marketing to create an awareness of issues important to their generation. They will produce television segments and newsletters that will address social issues, which will be distributed to high schools in Hampton. They also will produce radio spots that will air on 88.1 FM WHOV, the Hampton University radio station.

Tuition will be waived and lunch will be provided for students selected for the institute. The institute will start each day at 9 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m. On-campus housing will not be provided for this institute.

Applications are due to the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications by 5 p.m., Friday, June 25. Applicants will be notified by Friday, July 2 if they have been accepted to the program. Incomplete applications or applications received after June 25 will not be considered by the selection committee.
