HU Awarded $5.3 Million from the Department of Education

U.S. Dept. of Education

Hampton, VA - Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey announced today that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded Hampton University $5.3 million. The grants, awarded under the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and the Historically Black Graduate Institutions Program, will be used to support and enhance HU's academic programs and research facilities.

"Hampton University will use these grants to continue our mission of educating students to be scholars and leaders locally, nationally and internationally," said Harvey. "I commend President Obama's commitment to higher education and Historically Black Colleges and Universities."

HU will use the award to purchase scientific and laboratory equipment; renovate instructional facilities and support faculty and the development of academic instruction in disciplines in which African Americans are underrepresented. Additionally funds will be used to purchase library equipment and to enhance tutoring, counseling and other student services programs.

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and the Historically Black Graduate Institutions Program provide financial assistance to establish or strengthen the institutions' physical plants, financial management, academic resources and endowment building capacity.
