HU Offers Technology Classes to At-Risk Middle-Schoolers

Apprentice Students

Hampton, VA -Hampton University’s Center For Information Technology (CIT) is offering a free, two-week technology based program for Hampton middle school students. The program aims to provide hands on experience in information technology, computer skills and financial management to youth considered at risk.

In its first year, the CIT Apprentice program is a partnership between Verizon, Sam’s Club and the university. HU Assistant Provost for Technology Teresa Walker spearheaded the campaign as a way for HU to boost its involvement in community issues.

The program is on HU’s campus at the Academic Technology Mall (ATM) inside the William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library. Steven Richardson is the program’s coordinator and said participants can gain academic and social confidence. Participants, 12 total, were selected based on needs such as school grades, home environment and attitude.

“We want students to know that the people who work at Hampton care about our community … that because sometimes they get labeled does not mean the label is true,” Richardson said.  “We want them to learn and see positive role models of all racial groups. One of our goals is for the students to continue to dream and have goals and to know there are people who can help them realize their goals, if they just are willing to do their part.”

Registration for the program is closed, but organizers hope to offer it again next summer. For more information contact Steven Richardson at 757.728.6749 or steven.richardson@hamptonu.edu.
