HU Welcomes 1195 New and Transfer Students
Hampton, VA - Approximately 1, 200 new and transfer students will begin arriving on Hampton University’s campus Friday for the Fall 2009 semester. A total of 1,067 new students and 128 transfer students will begin classes next month. Freshman Orientation Week is Aug. 28-Sept. 8. The theme is “Welcome to Piratesville.”
Students are coming from diverse geographic and cultural backgrounds, including international countries like Jamaica and China. The top ten states students are coming from are Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Illinois, New York, Georgia, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio. The top five majors are business, nursing, biology, journalism and communications, psychology and undecided.
“I am excited to welcome the next class of Hamptonians. My hope is that they will embrace all that is available in terms of academic, cultural, and social opportunities,” said Angela Boyd, HU admissions director. “I expect that they will become actively engaged in the HU community, and go on to graduate, and make significant contributions to our society.”
HU was founded in 1868 by Gen. Samuel Armstrong Chapman, and is led by Dr. William R. Harvey. The school has five doctoral programs, seven schools, and three colleges. In 2007, the Princeton Review named HU one of the best 357 colleges in the nation. This month, HU was named sixth in the U.S. News and World Report Historically Black College and University ranking. HU is ranked 29th this year by the U.S. News and World Report ranking of southern universities. |
