HU to Host Walt Disney Imagineering Team
Hampton, VA -Walt Disney Imagineering Principal Facility Designer Dexter Tanksley, a 1993 Hampton University alumnus, will present the 2009 Walt Disney ImagiNations design competition to HU in the Student Center Theater Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m., along with members of the Walt Disney Imagineering team.
The competition was designed to find fresh talent in students interested in designing rides, hotels, attractions and other designs not yet thought of for Disney theme parks and resorts. Walt Disney Imagineering, creators of Disney theme parks and resorts worldwide, established the ImagiNations design competition 18 years ago.
Tanksley entered the competition in 1992 as an HU student. As a result of his success in the competition he was awarded a position with Walt Disney ImagiNations. Tanksley, along with other Disney representatives, will be available to answer questions about the competition, and recruit participants.
Students interested in the competition have an opportunity to earn a 10-day all-expense-paid trip to California to present their projects to Imagineering executives. Finalists will also have a chance to earn an internship with Walt Disney Imagineering.
In the past, students from the HU Department of Architecture have participated in the competition and done very well, placing as finalists in the 2007 competition. Two of the team members from 2007, Nikkolas Smith and Justin Harris, are currently serving as interns with Walt Disney Imagineering. This year, Walt Disney Imagineering wants to enlist all HU students to participate.
