HU Health Disparities Reduction Hosts Round Table
Discussion to Focus on Health Disparities Seen in the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
Hampton, VA - Hampton University Health
Disparities Reduction Project will host the Third Annual Health Round Table
on Oct. 14 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. The luncheon is free and open to anyone
interested in improving the health care of the community. This year's featured
guest speaker is Dr. Manning Marable, author and professor of public affairs,
political science, history and African-American studies at Columbia University
in New York City.
Marable is one of the most influential widely
read scholars and is a prolific author. He has written and/or edited almost
200 articles in academic journals and 20 books and scholarly anthologies.
"Structural Racism: Health Disparities and the Challenges of Inequality," is
this year's theme. Marable will be discussing health disparities in the
U.S. and relate health disparities to Hurricane Katrina.
"Hurricane Katrina was the epitome of health disparity and quality
of life issues in the U.S. It was an exaggerated version of what happens
to poor people and people of color on a daily basis," said Dr. Cheryl
Killion, research associate professor of nursing and director of Hampton
University's Health Disparities Reduction Program.
Killion was recently appointed to serve on the Federal Advisory Committee
on Minority Health. The members of the committee advise the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services on improving the health of racial and ethnic
minority groups and on the development of goals and specific program activities
for the department's Office of Minority Health.
Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, will also be in attendance
and will give the opening remarks.
