What do you do if you are an out-of-work singer with no prospects except life with a man you don’t love? Do you choose to use the man and live a lie in safety, or make your own way in the world, any way you can, as a free spirit? Set against the backdrop of a post-Renaissance Harlem, “Blues for an Alabama Sky” explores the reality of a changing world in which the creative brilliance of the Renaissance spirit is tested against the harsh realities of the Great Depression. The search for a better life may be more difficult, but the dream remains constant as the characters face hard choices about which sacrifices are necessary to achieve that dream.
Dr. Robin Jackson Boisseau, assistant professor of theatre, will serve as director. Boisseau received her master’s degree from Memphis State University and her doctorate from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has previously directed the Hampton Players in such performances as “The Taming of the Shrew,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and “Pirates of Penzance.”
Bresean Jenkins, assistant professor of theatre, will serve as costume designer. Jenkins has designed for numerous HU Players’ productions including “Smokey Joe’s Café,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Little Shop of Horrors.” And in his 21st season with the HU Players, Assistant Professor of Speech and Theater C.
