Hampton, VA - Hampton University scientists are hosting workshops for educators to improve their understanding of latest scientific developments. The Hampton University Interdisciplinary Science Center (ISC) recently received a $147,749 grant from the State Council for Higher Education of Virginia to fund a yearlong professional development program. ISC scientists are working with local educators from public and private schools in Portsmouth, Va. to improve their understanding of science. This program will allow teachers to teach science subjects more effectively to their students.
“This developmental program allows the ISC to help bridge the gap between scientists and educators,” said Dr. Dianne Q. Robinson, director of ISC, and the primary instructor of the program.
ISC worked with school supervisors to select a diverse group of teachers from private and public schools. Thirty teachers from grades 6-12 were selected based on their qualifications and recommendations.
“Some of the teachers in the program are new to the profession, others are experienced and they come from a variety of subjects,” said Dr. Barbara Maggi, project manager of the program at ISC. “We like to have a diverse group of teachers so they can learn from each other.”
Included in the professional development project, is a two-day workshop that focuses on the development of problem based learning modules. These modules are designed to show the professionals a way of teaching that will increase students’ knowledge about Virginia’s watersheds and improve literacy skills.
The teachers participate in after school sessions. At the end of the program, the teachers will go on a three-day field exhibition to the James River State Park.
