HU TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL TRIO DAY

Hampton, VA - Hampton University's Educational Talent Search program will celebrate National Trio Day with keynote speaker Dr. Kevin McCowan, director of the Peninsula Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, on Feb. 23 in the Student Center Ballroom from 10 a.m. to noon.

This event is free and open to the public. Limited seating is available. McCowan, a former participant of the TRIO program, will share his experiences of working at Ground Zero in New York after the Sept. 11 attacks. His experiences inspired him to write his recent book "A Surgeon's Story."

The federal TRIO programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

TRIO includes six outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college, and disabled students to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.

TRIO programs include Educational Opportunity Centers, Ronald E. McNair Post/Baccalaureate Achievement, Student Support Services, Talent Search, TRIO Dissemination Partnership Program, Training Program for Federal TRIO Programs Staff, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science.
