HU RANKED 2ND ON BLACK ENTERPRISE MAGAZINE’S
TOP 50 BEST COLLEGES LIST

Hampton, VA - Hampton University was recently listed second on Black Enterprise Magazine’s biennial list of the “50 Best Colleges and Universities for African Americans”. Hampton jumped from fourth place on the 2001 listing.

The nation’s only private, historically black, four-year liberal arts college for men, Morehouse College, was ranked first, making Hampton University the top co-educational university for African Americans to attend.

Black Enterprise says that despite rising college enrollment for people of color, blacks still lag behind their white counterparts in degree attainment. Because of this, the magazine says, the issue is not simply a matter of being accepted and going to college, but also about making sure the school meets the particular needs of the school’s academic reputation.

Spelman College, Howard University and Xavier University rounded out the top five, respectively.

The list is comprised of colleges that are either accredited four-year colleges in which black enrollment was at least three percent or are a large well-known college or university. Historically black colleges and universities made up seven of the top 10 positions on the list.
