HU to Hold Black Family Conference
Conference to address health disparities
Hampton, VA - Hampton
University’s School of Nursing will host the 25th Annual Conference
on the Black Family, on March 19-21 on the campus of Hampton
University. “Redressing Health Disparities: An Endowment for the
Future of Black Families,” is this year’s theme.
Dr. Ian Smith will be leading the presentation on “Issues on
Health Disparities: Keeping the Public Informed,” on Friday, March
21. Smith is the medical correspondent for NBC News network and for
NewsChannel 4. He files reports for NBC's "Nightly News" and the
“Today Show.” Smith also writes a weekly health column for the New
York Daily News and is a medical columnist for Newsweek magazine.
One of this year’s conference objectives is to determine
strategies to eliminate health disparities among ethnic minority
families by the year 2010. Some of the topics on this year’s agenda
include: “Cancer Prevention: The Power of Screening,” “Community
Strategies to Improve Access to Health Care,” and “The Most NOT
Wanted Listed: The Top 5 Killers of African-Americans.”
The William R. Harvey family will be honored as this year’s
“Honored Black Family.” In 1978, Harvey committed resources to
finding solutions to the problems that affect African Americans and
minority communities by initiating an Annual Conference on the Black
Family.
There is a $125 pre-registration fee. On-site registration is
$150, $75 for senior citizens (65 or older), $100 for groups of 10
or more and $30 for college students with a valid ID.
