HU to Hold Black Family Conference
Conference to address health disparities

Hampton, VA - Hampton University’s School of Nursing will host the 25th Annual Conference on the Black Family, on March 19-21 on the campus of Hampton University. “Redressing Health Disparities: An Endowment for the Future of Black Families,” is this year’s theme.

Dr. Ian Smith will be leading the presentation on “Issues on Health Disparities: Keeping the Public Informed,” on Friday, March 21. Smith is the medical correspondent for NBC News network and for NewsChannel 4. He files reports for NBC's "Nightly News" and the “Today Show.” Smith also writes a weekly health column for the New York Daily News and is a medical columnist for Newsweek magazine.

One of this year’s conference objectives is to determine strategies to eliminate health disparities among ethnic minority families by the year 2010. Some of the topics on this year’s agenda include: “Cancer Prevention: The Power of Screening,” “Community Strategies to Improve Access to Health Care,” and “The Most NOT Wanted Listed: The Top 5 Killers of African-Americans.”

The William R. Harvey family will be honored as this year’s “Honored Black Family.” In 1978, Harvey committed resources to finding solutions to the problems that affect African Americans and minority communities by initiating an Annual Conference on the Black Family.

There is a $125 pre-registration fee. On-site registration is $150, $75 for senior citizens (65 or older), $100 for groups of 10 or more and $30 for college students with a valid ID.
