PROGRAM TO HOLD FUND RAISING GALA
Proceeds to benefit at-risk youth
Hampton, VA - The Hampton University
Job Education Training Corps (JET) will hold the 3rd Annual Black
Tie Gala, “Keepers of the Dream,” on May 31 at 6 p.m. at the HU
Student Center. At the fund raising gala, the 2003 JET Visionary
Award, will be presented to President William R. Harvey.
“This year we are excited about honoring Dr. Harvey for his 25
years of service not only to Hampton University, but the community
as well,” said Donovan Rose, director, JET Corps. “He continues
to set the standard of excellence for all those who dare to dream.”
WAVY TV 10’s Don Roberts will be the master of ceremonies at the
event. The evening will include a silent auction, dinner and live
entertainment provided by Vince Priester, former saxophonist for
Gladys Knight.
JETS Corps began in 1992 as a brainchild of Harvey. The program
was modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps that was implemented
during the New Deal era. The program gives 14-17 year old at-risk
students the opportunity to participate in seminars, leadership
retreats and disciplinary training. Students are also instructed
in health, math and communication courses and are provided employment
on campus and in the community.
Since its inception, JET Corps has increased 91 percent of the
participants’ academic skills, increased participants’ class attendance
by 55 percent and decreased disciplinary problems by 55 percent.
The cost of the gala is $50 (tax deductible). All proceeds will
benefit the JET program. To purchase sponsorship packages, tickets
or ad space in the program booklet please contact Donovan Rose at
