HU TO HOLD SILVER SCHOLARSHIP GALA
A Tribute to President Harvey’s 25 years of service
Hampton, VA - Hampton University
will host the Silver Scholarship Gala on Friday, April 25, 2003, at
7 pm in the HU Convocation Center. The gala is a tribute to
President William R. Harvey’s 25 years of leadership to Hampton
University and the community.
There is a $250 scholarship donation. Proceeds will benefit the
University’s scholarship fund.
The evening will include dining and dancing with entertainment
provided by MCA Recording artists: ”The O.J.’s,” known for their
classic hits such as “Family Reunion,” “Love Train,” “For the Love
of Money,” and “Use to Be My Girl.”
Harvey’s leadership is reflected in the growth and quality of the
University’s student population, academic programs, physical
facilities, and financial base. During his tenure, the student
population was increased by 45% and the average SAT score was
increased by over 300 points. His commitment to expansion and
innovation in academics has resulted in 45 new academic programs at
the University.
Harvey has served on the President’s National Advisory Council on
Elementary and Secondary Education, the Defense Advisory Committee
on Women in the Service, the Fund for the Improvement of
Postsecondary Education, the Commission of Presidential Scholars,
the President’s Advisory Board on Historically Black Colleges and
the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Development Advisory Board.
Harvey has served as a board member of Fannie Mae, Anthem Blue
Cross, Blue Shield, and Wachovia Bank Mid Atlantic Region.
Being active in the community, Harvey has led several community
and educational initiatives, having served as the chair of the
Virginia Peninsula United Way Campaign. He was the first
African-American to lead the annual drive and raised a record $6.6
million.
Harvey is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve.
Harvey is married to the former Norma Baker, and has three
children-- Kelly Renee, William Christopher and Leslie Denise.
