HU SPONSORS ACTIVITIES FOR WORLD AIDS WEEK
Renowned AIDS physician to address students
Hampton, VA -
In an effort to encourage people to break the silence and the
barriers to effective HIV/AIDS prevention and care Hampton
University student organizations have united to sponsor activities
for World AIDS Week. "Live and Let Live" is the slogan of the
national World AIDS Campaign 2002-2003, which will focus on
eliminating stigma and discrimination.
Dr. Helena Kwakwa will give the keynote
address during "A Woman's Worth: Sisters Unite Against AIDS" seminar
on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Ogden Hall. Kwakwa is a physician
providing care to adolescents and adults with HIV infection at the
Mercy Hospital in West Philadelphia and the Jonathan Lax Center in
Center City Philadelphia. A native of Ghana, Kwakwa also has an
interest in HIV in Africa.
On Dec. 4, the Release: Fight for Life
Hip Hop Concert will take place at the Hampton University Student
Center ballroom from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Local hip hop and rap
groups will perform and AIDS educators from local agencies will be
at the concert distributing information about HIV and AIDS.
On Dec. 8, students will participate in
an AIDS walk. The walk will start at Ogden Circle at 2 p.m.
Following the walk at 4 p.m. there will be a candle light vigil at
Ogden Circle.
The HU World AIDS Week activities are
sponsored by the HU Pan-Hellenic Council, the HU chapter of the
Pershing Angels Sorority Inc., American Red Cross, Peninsula AIDS
Foundation, Auguron Pharmaceuticals, MACER, EVRAC, and J. Smith
Enterprises McDonald's.
