HAMPTON UNIVERSITY TO COLLABORATE ON BIOPHOTONICS CENTER RESEARCH

Hampton, VA - The National Science Foundation recently announced funding for the new Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology (CBST). Hampton University will be among the universities selected to participate in the advanced research. Hampton will join other universities including UC Davis, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, University of Texas, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and others.

Biophotonics is an interdisciplinary science of using light and other forms of radiant energy to understand the inner workings of cells and tissues in living organisms. The approach allows researchers to see, measure, analyze and manipulate living tissues in ways that have not been possible before. Some examples of biophotonics and medicine include:

  • New laser microscopes that allow measurements of single molecules and tissues at unprecedented resolutions.
  • New light-activated biomaterials that can be used to bond tissues for surgical applications
  • Widely tunable ultrafast laser sources, which provide access to molecular dynamics and structure

The center brings together roughly 100 researchers including physical scientists, life scientists, physicians and engineers. The $40 million funding for the new Biophotonics Center will be spread over the next 10 years.

Hampton University students will be involved in existing research at Hampton in the physics department with University Endowed professor Donald Lyons. If interested, they can enroll at UC Davis for summer research or at Lawrence Livermore Lab which is also a partner in the CBST
