Kyshira Moffett named Student Connection 2011 Model Student

The search for Hampton University’s model student has never been easy. With high achievers in every realm, Hampton has always boasted an abundance of star students. This year, it was difficult to deny the dazzle of one particular student’s shine. Kyshira Moffett, a third-year student in Hampton University’s five-year MBA program from Chicago, Ill., has been named Model Student for the 2010-2011 school year.

An ambassador for the Career Center, Kyshira is also a resident assistant, secretary of the Rho Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., treasurer of the Illinois Pre-Alumni Council, secretary of the NAACP, PRESS program mentor, as well as a member of the Honors College and several other honor societies. Kyshira was happy to answer a few questions about her new title.

Q. How does it feel to be this year’s model student?
A. It’s really cool. I was actually surprised that I won. It was really exhilarating and makes me very proud of my accomplishments.

Q. What do you believe helped you to stand out against the other candidates?
A. I think we are all really involved on campus. I think it was my essay on social media and my proposed program for the Career Center to use social media to reach out to students and let them know of career opportunities.

Q. Having gone through the selection process, what do you believe a model student is? Has your view changed?
A. I believe a model student is someone who embodies their university’s motto in doing everything they can to achieve excellence and to get that education for life. They’re also not just about themselves; they’re about the student body as a whole.

Q. How do you plan to use your new title?
A. I am excited to be an ambassador for the Career Center and all that it entails. From a personal standpoint, [having this title] encourages me to continue to strive for more.

Q. What else inspires and motivates you to strive for excellence?
A. I maintain my motivation because I know that this opportunity didn’t have to be for me. I’m a first generation college student, so I know many other people could have been in my place right now.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring Model Students?
A. I would say to do everything that you can to not put yourself in a box; that whole -“think outside the box” thing [is true]. Don’t think you have to fit into the typical mold of what a Hampton student is.

Q. What’s next for you?
A. This summer I’m interning with PriceWaterhouseCoopers and for the fall I look forward of being the president of the Rho Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and also revamping the student ambassador program for the Career Center. Hampton students have an abundance of opportunities that they don’t know about.

Through her achievements and accolades, it is clear that Kyshira’s humility and passion make her shine bright among the rest. With plans to expand her reach of influence to help as many people as she can, this year’s model student will definitely continue to make a positive impact on the campus and beyond.
