World AIDS Day at HU

Students sign the AIDS ribbon in the HU Student Center. Sororities and fraternities @ HU took part in publicizing World AIDS Day.

The Hampton University Student Leadership Program (SLP) and Student Government Association (SGA) coordinated the university’s events in recognition of World AIDS Day Dec. 1.

ACCESS, Inc. and HU Health Center officials administered free HIV testing in the HU Student Center Ballroom, and several events were scheduled throughout the day, including a candle light vigil and balloon release, in remembrance of those who’ve died from HIV and AIDS. There was also a panel discussion including officials from the Virginia Board of Health.

World AIDS Day is observed nationally, Dec. 1 every year. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988. It provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website.

Organizer and HU Senior and Student Leader Lauren Legette said the day’s events were a chance for students to be proactive about their health.

“I want the student body to realize that knowing your status isn’t something to be ashamed of,” Legette said. “The only death sentence is not knowing.”

President Jeffrey Eugene and Student Leader Lauren Legette were event planners for World AIDS Day @ HU. Students lay prostrate in the HU student center bearing statistics that emphasize the death toll of HIV/AIDS.
