Honors College Students Win Big at Black College Quiz

Hampton University Honors College students participated in the Know Your Heritage Black College Quiz in Nashville on Dec. 10-12. The team placed second in the competition earning $5,000.

Senior Isaiah Ares-Batko, junior Monte Flowers, freshman Sarah Joyce Berryhill and freshman Rachel Banks competed in the quiz bowl, which will appeared on television several times in February.

There were a total of eight teams competing in the quiz bowl. After defeating Tennessee State University and Grambling State University, the HU team competed against Winston Salem State University. After being down 500 points the HU team closed the gap to a 30-point difference, placing second in the competition.

“Our Black College Quiz Bowl team is a collection of some of our most dedicated, hardworking students,” stated Sabin Duncan, associate director of the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute and the HU Honors College. “Our second place finish is an improvement from last year, but does not satisfy our hunger to be the best.”

The quiz bowl aired locally on Feb. 6 on WTVZ, myTVZ.
