Black History Month at HU

Black History Month

Throughout February, the Hampton University Office of Student Activities hosted several events to commemorate Black History Month. The month’s theme was “Black Hollywood – The Struggle, The Passion, The Dream.”
“We wanted to honor superstars in history as well as current stars,” said HU Assistant Director of Student Activities Crystal Sessoms of the month’s theme.

Motown Karaoke, State of the Black Woman and State of the Black Man addresses, as well as a National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day event were all part of the month’s events. The latter event coincided with a national movement Feb. 7 to encourage blacks to get tested for HIV/AIDS. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is an annual, community mobilization HIV testing treatment initiative founded in 2001.

At HU, free, rapid HIV testing was available in the Health Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. As a result, 87 students were tested for HIV at the campus’ health center. That’s a 25 percent increase from the amount of students tested Dec. 1, when the campus recognized World AIDS Day, said Darylnet Lyttle, family nursing practitioner at HU’s  health center.

HU Players Debut Professor's Musical Sequel

Musical

Mama Dee’s family returned to the stage when the Hampton University Players and Company presented the national debut of “A Love to Call My Own,” the sequel to the nationally toured “Mama Dee’s Girls.”

As the closing production for the 2008-09 season, this musical holds a special place in the hearts of the HU Players; it’s story, music and lyrics were written by Dr. Karen T. Ward (K.T. Price), chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and director of the production.

In 2001, audiences across the nation were introduced to Mama Dee and her daughter, Lil Sis, in “Mama Dee’s Girls.”  In the production Lil Sis rose to the top of the music business only to see her professional triumph plunge when she’s accused of shooting a corrupt producer and sent to jail.  Later we learn that the real shooter was her 7-year-old daughter, Mia, who was trying to protect her mother.
