HU Inducts 15 Into First Athletics Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame

The inaugural Hampton University Athletics Hall of Fame welcomed its first members with 15 legendary names on November.

The Athletics Hall of Fame, approved by the University last December, has as its mission “honoring and recognizing individuals who have made superior and outstanding contributions to the Hampton University athletics program and whose accomplishments reflect the university’s reputation and image as one of America’s premier institutions of higher education.”

The Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2009 includes 10 former student-athletes along with three coaches and two administrators. Dr. Charles Wooding, chairman of the Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors, calls the initial class of inductees “a class of distinction.”

HU President Appointed to NCAA Presidential Search Committee

Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey, who is a member of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and its executive committee, has also been appointed to serve on the search committee to select the next president of the NCAA. The six-person presidential search committee will select a national search firm and intend to identify the next president prior to fall 2010. The president will replace the late Myles Brand, remembered as a towering figure who as NCAA president redefined the role of intercollegiate athletics in higher education

“Dr. Harvey has been appointed by his peers and charged with overseeing the operations in the NCAA’s search for a new president. His colleagues have a lot of confidence in his leadership and we are very fortunate to have his support,” said NCAA Interim President James L. Isch, NCAA senior vice-president for administration and CFO.

“Bill brings a history and a level of integrity to this organization as it searches for a new president,” said Wallace I. Renfro, NCAA vice president and senior advisor to the president.

Celebs Give Business Advice at UNCF Event

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Empower Me Tour this month cane to Hampton University this month.  The tour is being hosted by 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Entrepreneurship was the event’s focus.

The day’s happenings included information sessions for students, as well as a panel discussion entitled “Purpose, Passion, Power – Successful Entrepreneurs Doing It Their Own Way.” Season Four “The Apprentice” winner Randall Pinkett moderated the panel, which featured young, black entrepreneurs including, comedian and actress Sheryl Underwood, Attorney and Talk Show Host Warren Ballentine and TV One’s Make-Over Manor Life Coach Dee Marshall.

All panelists encouraged students to identify what it is their good at and enjoy doing. Then, be passionate and purposeful about it.
