Haggins Named First Female Chaplain

So long to the stained glass ceiling. For the first time in the 140-year history of Hampton University, the Rev. Debra L. Haggins has been named our "Home By the Sea's" first female chaplain. As chaplain, she will serve as pastor of the HU Memorial Church and director of the Religious Studies Program and will handle all religious affairs for the university.

“This appointment makes a strong statement to the world that we are all called and can be chosen for any particular task, so we need to be prepared to be sent wherever we are needed,” said Haggins.

Rock the Blue and White, Rock the... PINK?

Victoria's Secret Pink

Soon, Hampton University’s bookstore will have more than Steve & Barry’s to compete with in selling HU apparel. HU will be included in the second phase of Victoria’s Secret’s PINK Collegiate Collection which will debut in mid-December.

VS PINK is a sub-brand of Victoria’s Secret that debuted in 2004. Victoria’s Secret describes PINK as “a fully articulated lifestyle collection for young women.” It features loungewear, sleepwear, intimate apparel and accessories. PINK’s mascot and logo, a silhouetted pink dog, appears on some of the collection.

Marlon Wayans Promotes Obama

Marlon Wayans

Funny man Marlon Wayans and actress Jurnee Smollett brought a three fold message to Hampton University Sept. 12: Register to vote, register to vote in Virginia and vote for Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama.

Wayans, known for films like “White Chicks,” and “Scary Movie,” and Smollett, of “The Great Debaters,” passed the microphone between each other to voice their opinions on Obama, America’s first black male to secure a major party’s presidential nomination.
