HU Marching Force Vies for a Spot at the
Honda Battle of the Bands

A spot in the 2011 Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase is to a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching band as a trip to Super Bowl XLV is to a professional football team.On Jan. 29, eight HBCU marching bands will perform before 60,000 fans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and earn funding for their school’s music education programs.The competition for one of the eight coveted spots has begun and the Hampton University Marching Force needs your help in order to win a spot.

The Force is made up of about 200 members and performs at all home football games and selected away games. The Force was invited by then President-elect Barack Obama Inaugural Committee to participate in the 56th Inaugural Parade on Jan. 20, 2009.The represented Hampton University well as they marched on the streets of the nation’s capital.The HU band was one of only three Virginia groups to participate in the parade.

The Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB) Invitational Showcase is the world’s largest and most highly anticipated HBCU musical event and scholarship program of its kind.The program, which will mark its ninth year in 2011, is a platform to highlight and showcase the heritage and showmanship of the HBCU marching. For the 2011 program, each of the 45 bands participating in the Celebration Tour will receive a $1,000 grant for their music programs, with an additional $20,000 awarded to the eight institutions selected to advance to the 2011 Invitational Showcase.
