05/08/08 CHRISTOPHER GARDNER TO SPEAK AT HU COMMENCEMENT
 

Hampton, Va. - Christopher Gardner will serve as the keynote speaker at the 138th Annual Hampton University Commencement Exercises on May 11 at 10 a.m. in Armstrong Stadium. Gardner will also be a proud parent on Sunday. His daughter, Jacintha Gardner, will receive a bachelor's degree in business management and will be the first person in his family to graduate from college.

05/02/08 HU STUDENTS GIVE TO TORNADO VICTIMS
 

Hampton, Va. - The HU Student Government Association (SGA) sponsored a relief drive to help Suffolk, Va. residents impacted by the April 28 tornado. On May 2, the Virginian-Pilot reported the storm caused an estimated $28.6 million in damage. Outside of Suffolk, Va., located less than an hour from Hampton, Va., Carrsville, Colonial Heights, Brunswick, Gloucester, Halifax, Matthews and Surry counties were also touched by the windstorm, the article said.

05/02/08 TONY BROWN DONATES $100,000 TO HU SCHOLARSHIP FUND
 

Hampton, Va. - Tony Brown has donated $100,000 to the Hampton University scholarship fund. Brown, dean of the HU Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and commentator of the PBS series Tony Brown's Journal, made the donation in the form of an annuity trust.

04/24/08 HU RECEIVES $1.2 MILLION TO ENHANCE BIOLOGY PROGRAM
 

Hampton, Va. - Hampton University was recently awarded a $1.2 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The grant will be used to enhance the biology program at HU to fit the recommendations made in Bio2010, a set of changes recommended for biology programs as described by the National Research Council.
