The Special Assistant to the President for Research reports directly to the President. In that role this individual is responsible for facilitating a presidential mandate that all faculty members must engage in the research and grant writing processes. In an effort to actualize this mandate, the Special Assistant to the President for Research provides training related to grantsmanship and research as well as provides preliminary review of proposals prior to submission for funding. He/she also enhances the environment for research and creative programs at Hampton by encouraging and facilitating external funding for faculty and staff projects; supports the University's pursuit of academic excellence and works with and supports the activities of the Office of Governmental Relations.  In addition, the Special Assistant to the President for Research  capitalizes on external funding opportunities to support research professional and creative activities including, but not limited to: basic research, applied research, postdoctoral fellowships, curriculum development, community outreach, faculty-guided student research and targeted development projects; and  proactively connects faculty with information about federal, state, regional and local sources of grant and foundation funding.

A bi-weekly publication, "Research Opportunity Announcements, is prepared in the Office of Special Assistant to the President for Research and distributed campus wide.
