Wayne Dawkins
Assistant Professor Wayne Dawkins served as managing editor of BlackAmericanWeb.com from September 2003 to January 2005.
He was an op-ed columnist with the online newspaper through spring 2005.That season, Dawkins was an adjunct professor at the Scripps Howard School.He joined the full-time faculty in fall 2005.
Dawkins has published articles in the Encyclopedia of American Journalism History [2007]; the African American National Biography [2008], and the forthcoming Oxford Encyclopedia of African-American History since 1896 [2009].
His magazine pieces appeared in Black Issues Book Review, Air Tran Airways GO magazine, the NABJ Journal and African Voices.

He is author of “Rugged Waters: Black Journalists Swim the Mainstream” [2003]. After founding August Press in 1992, he published “Black Journalists: The NABJ Story” in 1993 and updated the seminal book in 1997.
In 2006, Dawkins edited and was a contributing writer to “Black Voices in Commentary: The Trotter Group,” an anthology. www.trottergroup.org
In all, August Press has published nine titles.
Dawkins was National Association of Black Journalists chairman of historical records for most of the 1990s.
Dawkins was an associate editor of the Daily Press of Newport News from 1998-2003 and worked as a daily newspaper journalist for nearly 23 years. He climbed the career ladder from reporter to assignment editor to editorial writer and op-ed columnist. Since 1980, he worked at four newspapers: The Daily Argus of Mount Vernon, N.Y., the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill, N.J.; the Post-Tribune of Gary, Ind. and the Daily Press.
Dawkins is co-founder and editor of the Black Alumni Network newsletter [Columbia University journalism] which was established in 1980.
He is a distinguished Journalism Alumni award winner [1990] and winner of a Columbia University Alumni Federation Medal [2004].
