Academic Advisement

Routine Advisement consists of

Academic Counseling

Counseling is different from advising in that it involves assisting students to build academic discipline, and develop skills for problem preventions and solution when necessary. Some students have issues that affect academic performance, and may require referral to the Student Counseling Center's personal counseling unit.

Academic Probation

Students are placed on academic probation when their cumulative grade point average falls below a 2.0 and you are not dismissed for academic deficiency.  They are then placed on a reduced academic course load [not to exceed 13 credits]; must enroll in EDU 295 [3 credit course] which is included in the 13 credits; and meet with an academic advisor in the Student Counseling Center. Students are placed on academic dismissal when their cumulative grade point average falls below the level required for the number of quality hours attempted. Please refer to page 22 in the Hampton University 2008-2010 Academic Catalog which covers quality point hours.  Students who wish to be considered for re-admission must (1) submit a re-admission application for provisional student status to the Director of Admissions; (2) enroll in Hampton U. Summer Session or in a pre-approved other accredited postsecondary institution, register for at least 6 semester hours of non-repeated academic courses and; (3) earn a GPA of not less than 2.5 in the courses attempted. The website [www.vtc.odu.edu/members] lists universities and colleges in the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education.  Hampton University will allow students to transfer both the grade[s] and GPA from within the consortium.  Students attending institutions outside the consortium will receive only credits hours earned.

Undecided Students

Sophomores through seniors who have declared Undecided as their current major will meet with their Academic Counselor/Advisor at the Student Counseling Center for semester planning and advising. Counselors in the office of Freshman Studies academically advise freshman who are Undecided majors.

Transfer Students

Transfer students are those students transitioning to Hampton University from other institutions of higher learning. The SCC facilitates the transition process. The SCC will complete an unofficial transcript evaluation for general core courses but not for more technical programs and upper level courses. If Transfer students have taken 30 or more credits, they do not have to take University 101. There is an orientation for Transfer students during the Fall and Spring Intake periods.
