Student Support Services - Graduate & Professional Schools Tours

One of the program's primary objectives is to equip students to matriculate to graduate school. In addition to preparing our participants academically, we plan an annual Graduate and Professional Schools Tour to expose them to potential options for graduate study. On January 31 and February 1, 2013, Student Support Services staff took 20 students to American University, Howard University, George Washington University, and George Mason University.

  • At American University, a contingent of students attended information sessions and toured the School of Public Affairs and the Kogod School of Business, while a smaller group of the students attended a Constitutional Law course at the W ashington College of Law.
  • All students received a general tour of Howard University and seven students attended a Medical School Open House, visited a cadaver lab, toured the facility, and sat in on a Q&A session with a second and a fourth year medical student.
  • At George Washington University, the students toured various graduate schools to include the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • Students then attended information sessions for George Mason University's Master of Public Policy, the Master of International Commerce and Policy, the Master of Health and Medical Policy, the Master of Transportation Policy, Operations, and Logistics, the Master of Peace Operations, and the Master of Information Development and Knowledge Management.

Participants reported that the tour familiarized them with the requirements necessary to attend graduate school, that it gave them a better understanding of the costs and funding options to finance graduate school, that the travel and meal accommodations were satisfactory, that the staff and tour guides were informative and answered their questions, and that having attended the Graduate and Professional School Tour, they were encouraged to be more involved in the SSS program. The 2013-14 Tour, scheduled for February 2014, will visit the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University, Duke University, and North Carolina State University.
