What is EDDI
EDDI is a White House initiative, and it is coordinated
by US Department of State (DOS), the US Agency for International
Development (USAID), and Peace Corps with additional support from
the Departments of Agriculture, Defense, and Labor and the Environmental
Protection Agency.
Following the March 1998 visit of President Clinton to Africa, EDDI
was launched to strengthen African educational systems and promote
Africa's integration into the world community of free-market democracies.
This White House Initiative is coordinated by an interagency committee
composed of representatives from the US Department of State, USAID,
Peace Corps, and other partners such as Winrock International.
The US Government has been involved in education and development
activities in Africa for many years. EDDI gives special attention
to the needs of girls and women, improving the quality of and access
to education, enhancing the availability of technology for education,
promoting democratic governance, and increasing citizen participation
in public affairs. EDDI focuses on developing educational partnerships
at all levels, influencing grassroots communities and policymakers
alike. These partnerships enhance democracy networks, community
resources, technological innovation initiatives, girls' scholarship
programs, and educational mentoring activities.
Goal
EDDI aims to integrate Africa into the global community of free
market democracies through targeted, innovative support to improve
the quality of, and technology for education in the 21st Century.
The key objective of the initiative is sustainability. Partnerships
are expected to continue beyond EDDI funding.
What is USAID?
