ANNOUNCEMENTS:
back
Welchia
Worm: October 17, 2003
Dear
Hampton Parent:
For
the past several weeks, the University has been battling the problem
of the Welchia Worm. This worm is a national problem affecting universities
and corporations around the country. While this worm does not harm
any system, it floods our network with traffic. This over abundance
of traffic denies Internet and Intranet services to our users. The
University has employed the following measures to combat Welchia:
• Visited all administrative and academic computers that sit
on our network and installed the Microsoft patch and antivirus updates.
• Invested in client antivirus software for all resident students.
• Visited each residence hall and room to assist students
in updating their computers and adding the antivirus software.
• Implemented two shifts for our personal computer technicians
to assist students in eradicating the worm.
• Implemented technology to drill down to the specific port
level to disable infected computers.
• Implemented a no charge technology assessment for any student
concerned about their ability to connect their computer to the campus
network.
• Contracted the services of an outside company to assist
the network team.
My
staff has worked around the clock to rid the campus of this worm.
As of the writing of this letter, we have restored Internet services
to all buildings that reside on Hampton University’s network.
I
hope this letter provides you with an understanding and an appreciation
of Hampton’s efforts in restoring network services. We have
worked to give our students the best technological services that
the market can offer. If you should have any questions regarding
our plan and execution, please contact me at CIT@hamptonu.edu.
Thank
you for your support of Hampton. I sincerely appreciate your patience!
With warm regards,
The Center for Information Technology
